Join the Club at New Castle-Henry County Public Library

New Castle-Henry County Public Library offers a variety of clubs open to area residents. Club membership is free, and there are no obligations for commitment.

The library’s chess club meets monthly to play chess and learn more about the game. All abilities are invited to join the club. Even those who do not know how to play chess can come and learn how to play. The club’s upcoming meetings are on the following Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.: September 12, October 10, November 21, and December 12.

The library has a book club designed for women who enjoy inspirational fiction. The Chick Lit Book Club meets every other month. The group will meet on Wednesday, September 13, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss What a Girl Wants by Kristen Billerbeck.

Writers, published or unpublished, are invited to join the library’s newest club. The Writers Club will discuss the challenges of writing, and share feedback and encouragement. The club’s first two meetings are Mondays, September 18 and October 16, at 6:30 p.m.

Library Offers Free Computer Classes

New Castle-Henry County Public Library is providing three free computer courses during the month of September. A PowerPoint Basics computer class will be held on Tuesday, September 5. Participants can choose to attend at 10 a.m. or 3 p.m. to learn about how to create business presentations and photo slide shows using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Adults over the age of 55 are invited to join Surfin’ Seniors on Thursday, September 14, as they learn the basics of using computers. This class will begin at 10 a.m.

Computer Basics is the subject of the computer class on Monday, September 18, offered at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. This class covers information including how to turn computers on and how to use computers to make life easier.

Library Participates in Nationwide Story Time, Offers Fall Programs

New Castle-Henry County Public Library is joining with sites across the nation on Thursday, August 24, in an attempt to set the record for the most people reading the same book on the same day. The library invites children, caregivers, and the general public to attend a special story time in the Children’s Library at 6:30 p.m. revolving around the book The Little Engine That Could. The “Read for the Record” campaign is an initiative of Jumpstart, a national nonprofit organization, with support from Starbucks, Pearson, Penguin (USA), American Eagle and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The library will begin offering weekly Story Times for ages 3 through kindergarten on September 1 and continuing to September 19. Participants can choose from Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. Toddler Time for ages 18-36 months will be held at 10 a.m. on the following Saturdays: September 9, 16 and 30. Caregivers are asked to register children for Story Time and Toddler Time to allow staff to provide personalized attention and materials for the children. The Children’s Library will be closed beginning September 21 and will re-open September 28. The staff will be moving furniture, shelving and materials in order to better serve patrons. Material from the Children’s Library can be turned in to the main desk or the drop box at the back of the library’s parking lot.

Library Offers Free Computer Classes, Movie Times and More

New Castle-Henry County Public Library offers a variety of free programs for adults during the month of August. On August 15, the library’s Bestsellers Book Club will meet at 6:30 to discuss True Believer by Nicholas Sparks. New members are always welcomed.

The library will feature the classic movie Pillow Talk starring Doris Day on Wednesday, August 16, at 1 p.m. in the library auditorium.

An Introduction to the Internet computer class will be held on Tuesday, August 15. Participants can choose to attend at 10 a.m. or 3 p.m. to learn about how to maximize their use of the Internet. Internet Security is the subject of the computer class on Wednesday, August 23, offered at 3 and 6:30 p.m. Learn how to protect yourself, the ones you love, and your identity on the Internet. Indiana Author Fair and Friends Book Sale Coming to Library on Saturday

New Castle-Henry County Public Library is hosting an Indiana Author Fair on Saturday, August 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. A Friends of the Library Sale and Swap will be held during the same time, with a preview sale for Friends members from noon to 1 p.m.

The Mid-Summer Indiana Author Fair will begin with an author forum from 1 to 2 p.m. Those interested in writing and publishing can bring their questions for the authors, who will discuss their own personal journeys to becoming published authors. From 2 to 5 p.m., authors will be available to sell, sign and talk about their books. The Author Fair will be held in the library’s auditorium.

Authors featured at the fair include the following:

Ruth Brookshire recently released a book of short stories entitled From the Cornfield Ghetto. Brookshire edits the quarterly magazine Weeds Corner. She is a retired schoolteacher from Tri High who worked in the magazine world in New York City. Weeds Corner is a family-friendly magazine that contains fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Brookshire will be selling her book, along with current and back issues of Weeds Corner on Saturday.

Troy Kennedy and Kevin Campbell will share their first book, Blessings of the Curse, which is a vampire story with a twist. Reviewer Sandy Amazeen calls the book “an interesting tale complete with a rich history and scale drawings of the assorted weapons used that horror and vampire fans are sure to enjoy.”

Dr. Mary Muchiri is an associate Professor of English at Taylor University. Her book Saved Through Fire: A Family Experiences Kenya’s War of Independence is about her family’s experience during the fight against the British Colonial government. Her latest book, due to be released soon, is His Banner Over Me is Love: The Dreams of an African Woman.

Tony Perona is a business writer turned author who will soon release the second book in his Nick Bertetto mystery series. His first book, Second Advent, began the Bertetto series. At the end of each story, the reader is challenged to decide for himself what the truth really is. There are always alternative explanations for what has occurred.

Charlene Perry recently released her second book, due out soon, is called Haunted Henry County, Volume 2: More Hoosier Tales of the Ghostly and Mysterious. The book includes tales of the Guyer Opera House, information about the Witch’s Circle (a cemetery that borders Delaware county), and the Legend of the Open Grave. Perry personally interviews people and takes photos to obtain information for her books. Perry will have copies of her first and second book.

Robert Reed follows a rich history in his book Indiana’s Covered Bridges. Indiana once ranked third in the nation in the number of covered bridges. Many of these beautiful structures are still standing today. Reed’s book features nearly 200 vintage photographs, representing more than 36 Indiana counties.

Terry Reeves is a children’s author from Fortville. His first book Six Little Kitties was illustrated by his granddaughter and was based on a true story about orphaned stray kittens who came to the author’s childhood home. Reeves’ latest book, Pogo Makes New Friends? focuses on a charming monkey.

Katherine Smith is a Knightstown resident who is making her mark in the world of mystery books. Smith has written nine novels, and is an avid fan of both mystery and romance. Her book The Summer Bones was named an Eppies finalist, and Blood is Thicker Than Water was a #1 mystery bestseller at the Fictionwise web site. Her latest book Seek Roses is due out in December.

Just down the hall from the author fair the Friends of the Library will be hosting a book sale and swap. Those who donate a children’s book or a cookbook can receive two free items. All 25¢ books will be 6 for $1.

Find Out More About Bigfoot at Library

Bigfoot… the stories have been around for ages, surrounded by suspicion and interest. The legend of Bigfoot has made its way into popular culture, bypassing the traditional scientific community. Those who have seen Bigfoot creatures, however, are often dismissed as crazy. Is this a fair characterization?

Not according to Larry Battson of Wildlife Education Services. Battson and his wife Cheryl are wildlife specialists who have traveled across the nation educating the public about wildlife. They regularly appear on WISH-TV Channel 8 with their animals including six tigers, 17 alligators, baboons, bears and many others. Their animals have been featured on Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, Animal Planet and Oprah.

While working with Jim Fowler of Wild Kingdom during a lecture in Georgia, Larry’s interest in the Bigfoot legend was piqued. Fowler was filming Russian brown bears and all the Russian guides wanted to talk about was a creature that they had seen that they thought was very similar to the North American animal known as “Sasquatch.”

“I had been interested in this since I was young, but didn’t really take it seriously,” Battson noted. “When I got some insight into the subject, my thinking changed dramatically.”

Now Battson travels the region discussing Sasquatch and researching reports of sightings. New Castle-Henry County Public Library will welcome Larry and Cheryl Battson on Thursday, June 22, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the subject of Bigfoot, or Sasquatch. Researchers use the Native American term Sasquatch to describe the large, ape-like creature that the general public refers to as Bigfoot. The term Bigfoot was coined by a California journalist and does describe the large footprints allegedly left by the Sasquatch.

The majority of Sasquatch encounters seem to be at night. While most sightings occur in the Pacific Northwest, the Bigfoot Encounters web site (to which Battson contributes) lists 13 sightings in Indiana since 1972.

Perhaps the most well-known Sasquatch sighting occurred in 1967 when Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin captured 24 feet of 16mm film of a walking ape-like creature in Bluff Creek, California. While many have tried to write off the footage as a hoax, it has never been proven that the film is not authentic. Larry Battson has met Bob Gimlin and will show the “Patterson footage” during the library program. Battson is currently planning a trip to Bluff Creek to film a Sasquatch documentary.

Is it really possible that a species of large mammals would go undiscovered by scientists? It is not implausible, notes Battson, since gorillas were discovered only 100 years ago and there are new species of animals and insects discovered on a regular basis.

While most of the work Larry and Cheryl do involves visiting schools to discuss animals, the Battsons have been sharing more presentations about Sasquatch recently after an Indiana library invited them to come and share their insights. Those who attend the program at New Castle-Henry County Public Library can expect a night of good entertainment. Participants are encouraged to share questions and stories. Most presentations attract at least one person who has experienced a possible Sasquatch encounter or know of someone with such an exprience.

“Either this is one of the greatest hoaxes ever known, or one of the most interesting animals ever known,” said Larry Battson. “Either way, it’s a heck of a good story.

This free program will be held in the auditorium of New Castle-Henry County Public Library, which is located on the library’s lower level. Registration is not necessary for this program.

Library Offers Summer Programs for Families

New Castle-Henry County Public Library welcomes families to come to the library and enjoy a variety of free programs. Unless indicated, programs will be held in the Children’s Activity Room and do not require registration.

Monday Movies at 2 p.m. begin June 5, with What’s New Scooby Doo? (88 minutes) as the featured movie. The movie for June 12 is Shaggy Dog (101 minutes), and June 19’s movie is George of the Jungle (92 minutes).

Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m. are reserved for “special programs” in the Children’s Library. On June 7, learn more about jesters and make a hat at the “Be A Jester” program. Make a batch of play-dough and take some home during “Scientific Cooking” on June 14. Create a puzzle in a bottle on June 21. Registration is requested for these special programs. Come to the library’s auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, for a Family Comedy Open Mic Night. Share your best jokes and funny life observations at this side-splitting event for all ages.

Every Friday, the Children’s Library will offer Story Time at 10 a.m. Children can enjoy stories and activities during this weekly activity.

Create a craft to take home during Super Saturday Craft Times. Every Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., children can drop by and make a craft. The craft for June 10 is an ice cream soda magnet, and the craft for June 17 is a “squeakin’ squawkin’ chicken.”

The library will host Family Movie Afternoons two Saturdays a month at 2 p.m. in the library auditorium. On June 10, the movie is Cheaper by the Dozen 2; and on June 24, the movie is Bambi 2.

Children ages 7 through 10 are invited to join the Birthday Club. On the month of their birthday, they will be invited to a party for all children who share a birthday month. The party for this month is June 17 at 10 a.m. To sign up for the birthday club, visit the Children’s Library.

The activities offered in the summer are part of the library’s “Laugh it up @ your library” summer reading program. Participants can sign up at the library or on the bookmobile. Laughter Is In Store During Library’s Summer Reading Program

What building has the most stories? The library!

Riddles and giggles will fill New Castle-Henry County Public Library as the library launches its summer reading program with the theme “Laugh it up @ your library.” The summer reading program, open to all ages, begins on the bookmobile May 30 and in the library on June 3.

The programs on the bookmobile and in the library will maintain their established structure with improved prizes and added opportunities to win. Children who come to the bookmobile will be rewarded just for visiting the traveling library. Grand prizes on the bookmobile for kids are a Zvue video player, game boy micro and $50 Visa gift card.

Teens and adults who come to the library or the bookmobile can choose books that interest them, read the books, write a short review, and turn in their review cards when they bring their books back. They will receive a small prize just for turning in their cards (limit three prizes per visit) and be entered into a weekly and grand prize drawing. Weekly prizes include Starbucks gift cards and movie passes. The grand prizes for teens are an iPod Nano, an Anime boxed set, and a $50 gift card. There will be three grand winners for the adult program as well, with each winner receiving a $100 Visa gift card.

Children who visit the library can participate in a program similar to the adult and teen programs, with a grand prize of a portable DVD player. Children can also win a small prize by solving the weekly “secret riddle.”

As an added bonus this year, summer reading participants can earn extra entries into the weekly and grand prize drawings by attending the various free programs offered at the library this summer.

The library’s summer reading program is sponsored by Friends of the Library, with support from many local businesses.

Teens looking for something to do this summer can find fun, free events at New Castle-Henry County Public Library. These programs are part of the library’s “Laugh it up @ your library” summer reading program. Teens can earn entries for weekly and grand prizes simply by attending these activities. The summer kicks off with the third annual teen read-a-thon from 12 to 5 p.m. on Monday, June 5. Teens can get a head start on summer reading and enjoy free pizza. Teen Knit Night is Tuesday, June 6, at 6:30 p.m. Bring your own materials and have fun with other teen knitters.

Play Call of Duty on 20 networked computers during the LAN party on Friday, June 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. A Teenscape Game Fest will run from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 29.

Library Lands ‘Great Stories’ Grant for Teen Book Discussions

New Castle-Henry County Pubic Library was recently named as a winner of a Great Stories CLUB grant. The Great Stories CLUB is a book club grant program organized by the American Library Association, with a grant from Oprah’s Angel Network, to provide young adults with the opportunity to discuss books relevant to the challenges in their lives.
The library will partner with the Henry County Youth Center to offer book clubs to troubled teens. The library will receive eleven sets of three books to provide to members of the book club, along with online resources to plan and implement the program. Book selections, theme and program support materials are developed by YALSA’s Outreach to Young Adults with Special Needs Committee. The theme for the Great Stories CLUB is teens facing challenges.

American Girl Doll Raffle

Friends of the Library are selling raffle tickets for three American Girl Dolls. Tickets are one for $2, or three for $5, and are available at the circulation desks, Friends Gift Shop, and from Friends of the Library board members. Staying home for Spring Break this year? There’s lots to do at New Castle-Henry County Public Library.

Teens are invited to participate in an art contest, with the winner announced during National Library Week at 6 p.m. as teens get ready to “get down” and “chow down” at the DDR Tournament and Pizza Taste-Off. This party is planned for April 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. For those outside of the teen scene, DDR stands for Dance Dance Revolution... a popular game matching dance moves on a special footpad connected to a game system.

There are several activities planned in the Children’s Library, too. On Monday, enjoy a funny movie in the story room at 2 p.m. Snacks will be provided.

Kids ages 8-12 will kick off Piggy Poetry Month during library week. On Wednesday, April 5, at 3 p.m., the Piggy Poetry activity will include a pig hunt, Jack Prelutsky poems and a craft.

Stop in at the Children’s Library on Saturday, April 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to make an Easter Craft.

Story Time for ages 3-kindergarten will continue during National Library Week at 1:30 on Tuesday and 10 a.m. on Friday. Toddler Tales will be offered on Saturdays at 10 a.m. in April.

The Children’s Library is celebrating National Poetry Month with “Piggy Poetry,” a series of programs for ages 8 through 12. Library Dishes Up Culinary Mysteries

It’s a genre that grows in popularity every year: the culinary mystery. New Castle-Henry County Public Library is celebrating culinary mysteries with a special meeting of the Cookbook Club on Thursday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s Jennings Room.

Those who enjoy food and a good mystery are encouraged to pick up a book from the list of authors available at the main desk or share from a book they have read in the past. During the activity, participants will be asked to share what they liked about their selection and their favorite culinary mystery recipe.

The culinary mystery genre began in the early 1980s with the popularity of The Cooking School Murders by Virginia Rich. Culinary mysteries are generally light-hearted, with less emphasis on violence and more emphasis on food. Many culinary mysteries include recipes.

The Cookbook Club at New Castle-Henry County Public Library is informal and welcomes new members, even if they only want to come to one meeting. There are no dues, commitments, or responsibilities involved with the club, which is designed for people who enjoy cooking and/or eating.

The April meeting of the Cookbook Club will be a Chili Cook-Off. Participants are invited to bring a pot of their favorite chili to share. The Chili Cook-Off will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, in the library’s auditorium.

Spring Activities Planned for the Children’s Library

Spring has arrived at the Children’s Department at New Castle-Henry County Public Library. A variety of activities are planned for all ages. Unless noted, activities will take place in the activity room in the Children’s Library.

Spring Story Time for ages 3 through kindergarten is offered on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. Story Time begins on March 21. Toddlers (ages 18 to 36 months) and their caregivers are invited to Toddler Tales. This story-based program will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturdays in April. Registration is requested for both Story Time and Toddler Tales in order to provide personalized materials for the participants.

The entire family is invited to Family Night Story Time on Tuesday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. Registration is not necessary for this free program.

Children ages 7 through 10 are invited to join the Birthday Club at the library. On the month of their birthday, club members will be invited to a birthday party which will include other children with birthdays in the same month. The parties will be held on the third Saturday of every month from 10 – 11 a.m. Children who want to join the birthday club must be registered prior to the party day. The March Birthday Party is scheduled for Saturday, March 18.
The Children’s Library is celebrating National Poetry Month with “Piggy Poetry,” a series of programs for ages 8 through 12. The “Piggy Poetry” series will take place at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays in April. Programs include crafts, pig hunts, Jack Prelutsky poems, “pigericks” and more. Children must be registered in order to participate in this free program.

The Children’s Library is honoring National Library Week during April 2-8 with a variety of activities. On Monday, April 3, at 2 p.m., watch the hilarious family movie “Wallace & Gromit: the Curse of the Were-Rabbit.” Author Terry Reeves will present a program and book signing on April 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s auditorium. Children are invited to stop by to make an Easter Craft on Saturday, April 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is not needed for these programs.

Lacy Presents Latest Book

For more than 45 years, Donald Charles Lacy has answered a divine calling. A calling to put words to paper and share those works with others. Lacy’s passion for the written word all started with an article for a professor at seminary and continues to flourish 1,000 published pieces later.

A weekly columnist for The Courier-Times, Lacy will share his latest book with readers during a program at New Castle-Henry County Public Library on Saturday, March 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. The program will take place in the library’s auditorium. Readers are invited to meet Lacy anytime between 1 and 4 p.m. At 1 p.m., Lacy will open with some short remarks. He will then be available to talk with readers and sign copies of his book.

Fast Food for the Soul is a collection of Lacy’s columns that take a common-sense approach to moral issues. In a fast-paced culture, Lacy’s writings offer sustenance for the soul and satisfaction for the spirit. This latest book contains 99 columns, with topics ranging from anger and despair to forgiveness and joy. Most columns begin with a story, often from Lacy’s own life experiences. His columns are in their eighth year.

Lacy spent his early childhood years in Henry County’s Stony Creek Township, and his first educational experiences were under the direction of teachers Marie Buell and June Stanley. His family’s connections to the area are deep, and most of his relatives are buried in Henry County. When he was a grade-schooler, his immediate family moved just across the line to Delaware County.

While Lacy has four earned degrees, he still calls himself “a skinny little timid boy.” His pulpit experiences took him from tiny towns such as Leesburg and large cities including Indianapolis. His works have been published in virtually every newspaper in the state of Indiana.

Lacy is technically retired, but his life is still filled with ministry opportunities. He supplies preaching at various churches and is currently serving at the Madison Street Methodist Church in Muncie. He spends time with people from other denominations, especially the Catholic Church, and is working to build bridges between Catholics and Protestants. He also speaks at seminars throughout the region. His next book will be a collection of sermons and is due for release in May. Lacy lives in Muncie with his wife, Dorothy.

Interacting with readers of his columns is an enjoyable experience for Lacy. He has done over 50 different events like the one at the library on Saturday.
“People are people. There are no uninteresting people,” he said. “Everyone can teach you something, but you have to be willing to learn.”

Friends Gift Shop, Book Room Up & Running

The Friends of the Library book sale room and gift shop are serving customers and bringing in funds for library projects.
	The gift shop will be open from 2-4:30 p.m. on specified days, and also on Saturday. Stop by the shop to buy book bags, coffee mugs, jewelry and more. The shop is conveniently located across from the main circulation desk. Volunteers are needed to staff the shop.
The book sale room is open when the library is open. Customers bring their purchases to the library's circulation desks to pay for them. A special book sale is planned for Saturday, April 8, during National Library Week. Friends members can stop by from 9-10 a.m. for special pricing. The general public can attend the sale from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Friends always welcome donations of books, magazines, DVDs, videos and cds to sell in the book sale room. Check your shelves for items you no longer use that others may want to buy.

Celebrate Seuss!

That's the number of people who attended the library Grand Opening on Sunday. It was cold and snowy outside, but the warmth of excitement at the opening of the new library building was felt by all inside.

The ceremony included comments from Mayor Tom Nipp, State Representatives Tom Saunders and Phil Phlum, and State Senator Beverly Gard. Library Director Jan Preusz, Former Board President Martin Shields, Owners Representative Fred Brames, and Architect Mike Montgomery shared their comments with the audience as well. Library Board President Debby Weidert and Director Jan Preusz cut the ribbon to wrap up the ceremony.

Immediately following the ribbon cutting, Pat Cronk McCraine provided musical entertainment for guests. Mike Fleming and friends sang a variety of bluegrass tunes, and Kevin Kendrick played classical piano during the day as well.

Get Free Help with Tax Returns

Free tax preparation assistance is available at the New Castle-Henry County Public Library through the AARP tax-aide service. The service is available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning February 1 and continuing through the tax season.

AARP tax-aide is the nation's largest free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service. This service is designed to answer the tax issues faced by low-and middle-income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older. Those using the service are asked to bring all 2005 tax statements and 2004 tax return. E-filing is also available.

The library's Winter Reading Program started yesterday. Stop by the library to sign up for the program and get your card. For each visit, have a staff member mark your card. After 10 visits, you can pick up a prize. If you sign up during the month of December, you'll receive a candy cane. The Winter Reading Program will conclude on February 18, at the close of the library’s grand opening week.

Library Reopens to Serve the Public

New Castle-Henry County Public Library re-opened Monday after a two-week closing to settle into its new facility. All primary library services are functioning, but the library will reserve its grand opening celebration for February 12-18, when the finishing touches on the building are complete.

Visitors to the library this week can take advantage of library tours, which will be offered by Friends of the Library at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. today. Tours will be available at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Magician and actor Don Miller will present “A Charles Dickens Christmas” tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Meeting Rooms A & B. Part historical re-enactment and part magic show, this program is designed for all ages.

Children are invited to stop in to the Children’s Library to decorate and eat a cookie on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Learn more about the challenges of feeding a family during World War II during the Cookbook Club’s next program on Tuesday, November 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s upper level meeting room. Grandma’s Wartime Kitchen will take participants on a trip back in time to explore what it was like to be a homemaker during World War II. Passion v. Arrogance

New Castle-Henry County Public Library welcomes author and former business owner Margaret Broderick. Broderick will share her story, as told in the book Passion V Arrogance: A Dana & Goliath Story of Wine, Women and Wrong! Broderick’s program will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, in the library’s upper level meeting room.

Broderick recounts a compelling story of a small Midwestern women-owned winery, their impressive start to international growth, the difficult business decision to close, and the results from the business world. The story captures the excitement, commitment and the dream that all entrepreneurs possess when they start. As someone who lived the story, Broderick will candidly discuss the mistakes, struggles and ultimate belief in the leadership, management and vision that allowed her, along with her partner, to continue the battle.

The program would be especially interesting for current and future entrepreneurs, and anyone who enjoys a good story.

Margaret Broderick, an Indiana University graduate, has a Masters in Business Administration and more than 17 years of management experience. The company she started received the 2000 and 2001 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalist award, and the WNBA finalist of Entrepreneurial Spirit and Achievement Award (one of four out of 150 nationwide). Broderick is currently traveling the nation to talk about her business experience and her book.

Rock ‘n Read Coming to Library

Staff members from New Castle-Henry County Public Library, along with members of the Friends of the Library, will be “Rockin’ and Reading” from 1-5 p.m. on Thursday, October 6. Participants will be reading aloud while sitting in rocking chairs. The event is part of the county-wide “Put Your Nose in a Book” red-nose campaign to support local literacy efforts. Library Staff Recognition 2005 was a success. There was plenty of pizza and other good stuff from Mancino's to go around.

Louise proved herself to be the "memory master" and won the prize for the game.

Although she wasn't able to be with us, Angela was recognized for 5 years of service with the library. Celestine was honored for her 25 years of service. What a show of endurance!

Library Offers Digital Sanborn Maps

New Castle-Henry County Public Library received a donation for the online edition of the Digital Sanborm Maps for Indiana and Ohio. Sanborn maps are valuable historical tools for urban specialists, social historians, architects, geographers, genealogists, local historians, planners, environmentalists, real estate professionals, and anyone who wants to learn about the history, growth, and development of American cities, towns, and neighborhoods. The maps include information such as the outline of each building, and the size, shape and construction materials used to build it. The maps also give street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. Seven or eight different editions represent some areas. They cover from 1867 to 1970. In addition, the library has the major Henry County towns on microfilm.

Other library databases, many of which can be used from home include:

Encyclopedia Brittancia - a comprehensive database that contains a complete encyclopedia and the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.
INSPIRE - a collection of more than 20 databases provided by the state of Indiana.
NoveList - a resource to help fiction readers find new authors and titles.
BookLetters - subscribe to a newsletter that will keep you up to date on the materials of interest to you.
BooksInPrint - find detailed information about books, audiobooks, and videos/DVDs currently in circulation.

Library Building Set to Open Later this Year

As the opening of the completed New Castle-Henry County Public Library approaches, work on the project is moving at a brisk pace. The library is set to be finished by the end of this year, and plans for a grand opening are underway.

A focal point of the new library will be the main entry. This atrium will join the Carnegie library with the other renovated portion of the library to the new addition. Marked by large windows and a set of doors accessible from 15th Street, the atrium will welcome patrons into the library with its spacious, high-ceilinged corridor. This atrium will soon be visible, as the steel will be erected in the next few weeks.

The roof on the corner building is nearly complete, and masonry contractors will be on site soon to lay the exterior bricks. Drywall for the interior rooms in this section will soon be installed.

Work also continues on the new addition, as finishing touches are made. Wood trim is being installed on the metal railings, further improving the look of the new addition. The work is being done at night, in order to avoid interference with the operation of the library. The fireplace log inserts have been installed, and the fireplaces will be ready for use during the chilly days of fall. Work is underway for the glass wall that will contain etchings of various Henry County symbols and historic events. This wall will be located on the east side of the Indiana Room.

Library Adds Ancestry Library Edition Database

New Castle-Henry County Public Library now offers Ancestry Library Edition. This database is designed to help the casual or serious family researcher. The database can help find the answers to interesting questions about a family's background.

Users of this database can search the collection of family trees, or start work on their own family tree. The site contains census records, immigration records, military records, family and local histories, newspapers and periodicals, and birth, marriage and death records.

This database joins the existing HeritageQuest resource for genealogy buffs. The Ancestry Library Edition can only be used in the library while HeritageQuest can be used at home.

Library Chess Club

Building Update

Library Construction Nears Final Stages

Pass by New Castle-Henry County Public Library, and it is clear that the end is in sight for the building project. Contractors have recently completed the structure for the southwest corner, giving a clearer picture of the finished product. Soon this area, which was once the ‘76 building, will receive a new roof. Interior framing of the area’s lower level is nearing completion. This section of the new library will house administrative offices and meeting rooms. The exterior brick of this area is scheduled to start July 15.

The main floor in the remodeled building has been poured and is at the same level as the floor in the original Carnegie building. Heating ducts and electrical conduit are being installed. The drain system around the perimeter of the remodeled ‘76 building has been installed and the dirt has been backfilled.

Work on the library’s main elevator hit a major road block during renovation. The old main elevator shaft had to be completely removed because of problems associated with its initial construction. These issues were unknown until the remodeling began.

The original railings which had a manufacturing error that left the railing with rough edges have been replaced with the permanent, much-improved railing. Wood trim will be added to the top and bottom of the railings beginning July 11.

The library will soon announce a grand opening date. A committee is working to plan a week-long celebration of the library’s completion.

Your Library Has WiFi

What is WiFi?
WiFi stands for Wireless Fidelity and is generally used to describe wireless Internet access. The connection is obtained from wireless access points located throughout the library.

How can patrons use WiFi?
They must be using a computer or PDA that has WiFi connectivity already working. Most portable computers can add WiFi using an adapter that plugs into a PC card slotor USB port.
Do patrons need to have an account?
No. They simply use the service. We do ask that they comply with all library computer use policies while using this connection.

Grant Expands Library's Spanish Collection

The library was recently awarded a Library Services and Technology Act Hispanic grant in the amount of $7500. The majority of the funds will be used to purchase Spanish books and videos, and some of the funds will be used for staff training in conversational Spanish.

Department supervisors have nearly completed the process of selecting materials for the library's collection. Materials are available on the bookmobile as well as the main library building. At the library, all Spanish materials are located in the reference section, on the second level of the library.

The main focus of this project is to provide a larger collection of Spanish and bilingual materials to the Hispanic community in Henry County. As a result of this project, Spanish-speaking community members will have the recreational and educational library materials they need for personal growth and lifelong learning.

This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Indiana State Library.

Security Briefing #4

Phishing Gets Sophisticated

First, a cautionary tale:

Chris Prosise, a security consultant and VP at Foundstone (www.foundstone.com) shared a recent case history.

He told the story of an attorney who'd been defrauded $50,000 from her online bank account. It seems she logged into her account one day last summer and discovered that $20,000 had recently been transferred out of the account without her approval. She immediately called the bank and alerted them to what she believed was a security problem at their end. The bank changed her password and login and told her the new password and login over the phone. The bank also called in Prosise's company to do an immediate security audit to find out if the problem was at their end -- or if the woman had unwittingly given others access to her account. The woman logged into her bank account, using the new password and login and was reasonably satisfied the problem was behind her.

But when she logged into her account again later that day, she discovered that another $30,000 was missing.

So how did this happen? How did the intruders get her brand new password and login so quickly? Was her phone tapped? Was there an insider at the bank aiding the criminals?

A few background details:
--She was using a home computer, connected via dialup to the Internet --She had never logged into her online bank from anywhere but her home computer --She did not own a laptop computer and had never used any wireless networks --She said she had never responded to any bank or eBay phishing emails --She said she was very careful with her password and login and had never shared them with anybody or stored them on her computer --She was using a firewall and anti-virus software.

Since this message has 'phishing' in the title, you may have guessed that that's what happened -- she gave away the information as result of a phishing request.

If that was your guess -- you're right. But she didn't respond to the type of email we talked about in our last message. Instead, she followed what looked like a legitimate link to a legitimate website that she regularly visited.

The phishing she was hit with represents a new type of attack, one that's targeted at a specific audience. She was a real estate attorney. The site she visited was a professional real estate site aimed at real estate attorneys. The message looked like so many of the other messages the site sends out regularly to alert users of new content. She followed the link in the message, just as she had many times before. The regular site (actually a hacker's duplicate of the site) opened when she clicked the link in the email message. She read the page and thought nothing more of it.

What she didn't know (aside from the fact that this was a duplicate of the legitimate site) was that when she loaded the page, that page installed trojan software on her computer. (Yes, websites CAN install software on your computer.) This trojan software included a keylogger and an itty-bitty email program. A keylogger is a program which records keystrokes and mouse clicks. When she logged into her online bank, the keylogger recorded the password and login and emailed them to a recipient in Romania. Once she logged out, the Romanian logged in and transferred money to his account.

Note: even though the bank was using secure web pages (https://) the keylogger got around that and was able to record the information. So, don't think that using a secure site means you are secure.

So how can we protect ourselves from such attacks?

Use a firewall and anti-virus software and keep them up to date. (It's possible that neither would have stopped this attack, though, since most AV software doesn't detect trojans and the installation program could've slipped by the firewall.)
Keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date and patched at all times. (Yes, Mac users, these kind of attacks have so far only been detected on Windows machines. But, most security analysts agree that as Macs gain popularity, they too may become targeted.)
Don't use Internet Explorer. (My next Security Briefing installment will try to convince you to folow this advice.)
Never follow links in email messages. Even if you trust the source. Another alternative to this would be to have your email software NOT display HTML messages. The message this woman received (as well as all those eBay and bank phishing messages) use HTML because with HTML you can do things like disguise web addresses. I'm hesitant to recommend this because so many legitimate organizations are now sending email in HTML and disabling this feature would make those messages very hard to read.

Another Note: Some of you may be wondering if the keylogger could've snagged the password and login had she cut and pasted her password into the login page instead of just typing them is. The answer is, 'yes, probably.' Most keyloggers can also catch data that's cut and pasted.

Security Briefing #3 - Phishing

From Dictionary.com - Definition:
The practice of luring unsuspecting Internet users to a fake Web site by using authentic-looking email with the real organization's logo, in an attempt to steal passwords, financial or personal information, or introduce a virus attack; the creation of a Web site replica for fooling unsuspecting Internet users into submitting personal or financial information or passwords.

EMAIL CONS: PRE-CURSORS to PHISHING
You've probably seen email con messages. Although not officially 'phishing,' they marked one of the first uses of the Internet and email to defraud people. Usually, these messages pretend to be from someone claiming to need help in transferring a large amount of money from a foreign bank. Usually the author promises (in fake broken English and LOTS OF CAPITALIZATION) that in exchange for your assistance in getting money out of their country, they will give you a cut of the stash. There's usually a hint at illegality or, at the very least, a need for 'URGENT CONFIDENTIALITY.' Normally, the goal is to get you to wire the sender cash or provide them with enough data so that they can steal your identity. Some of these messages may actually be from the third-world country they claim. (This is actually a very profitable cottage industry in Nigeria, although it's frowned upon by their government.) Others are copycat criminals, right here in the U.S. or in Eastern Europe or China. Most of these messages rely on you replying to the email or calling a phone number to begin the transaction. I seriously doubt that any of us have fallen for these ploys. But the rule here is to never give out personal information to strangers. Even if they promise you a cut of their 'US $15.5M.'

Do these scams work? Yes. More info can be found by Googling 'email hoax', 'Nigerian hoax' or 'Nigeria 419' (419 is the id for the Nigerian criminal code written to combat this type of fraud.)

PHISHING, eBAY STYLE
The next level of Phishing is a bit sneakier. The sender, pretending to represent a bank, eBay, PayPal or some other financial institution, sends you an email to alert you that someone else has either charged merchandise to your account or somehow compromised your account's security. Or they may be telling you that it's now time to update your account information. Some of these are pretty slickly done. They'll use the same fonts, graphics and even language and phrasing that the legitimate site uses. Occasionally, you'll see a misspelling or typo, though. (A recent 'eBay' message I received had a subtle clue: it mentioned that if I didn't update my information immediately, it would later cost me a 'fee of 350 $.' Why would a U.S. company write a currency amount like that, in European style?)

In this style of phishing, the sender will give you a link to follow to fix the alleged problems. If you follow that link, (BUT DON'T DO THIS) the page you see will look and feel like the real financial institution's site. And if your browser software isn't patched for the latest security exploits -- the location shown in the location bar at the top of the screen may appear to be the legitimate one. For example, Bank One's real online banking address is www.bankone.com.
Let's say I get a phishing email pretending to be from Bank One and I follow the provided link. Once I reach the page (If I have a vulnerable version of Internet Explorer) the location in the location bar may read 'http://www.bankone.com' -- even if the site is actually hosted on a hacker site in Eastern Europe and has an entirely different address.

A few things to learn from this:

Keep your browser / computer / operating system up to date.
Never follow a link sent to you in an email address. I know this sounds extreme, but this is the safest route to take.
(Maybe I can convince you to follow this rule once you read the next installment of these security briefs: Phishing Gets Sophisticated.)
Financial institutions will NEVER, NEVER contact you via email to get information from you. Visit PayPal or the eBay site or any online bank and you'll find the same disclaimer. Any such contact must be initiated by you. They will NEVER ask you to update your information via an email message.

If you view an suspicious email's header information you can get some information about the real source of the message. Some of the information in the header may be faked -- but there's one thing that can't be altered - the sender's IP address. You won't be able to tell who really sent the message (most phishers either move around, switching ISPs almost daily, or they know how to obfuscate their real location.) But, by looking at the header you will be able to tell who the message is NOT from. Example: This week alone, I've received about a dozen messages purportedly from eBay telling me my account information needs verification. If I look at the header information for any of these emails, I should see an IP address. (Your email software will have a menu choice saying something like 'view long headers' or 'view full headers,' so that you can view header information.)

Look at the line labeled 'Received:'
Notice, there is a mention of 'ebay' on that line. But that part can be faked. You'll notice a number -- [193.108.235.10]-- listed twice in that line. That's the IP number used by the computer which sent the message. Again, you're probably not going to be able to find the original sender using this number, but you will be able to tell if this is really coming from eBay. How? Go to the American Registry for Internet Numbers: www.arin.net (OK, given what I said above, don't follow this link. Type it into your browser.)
When you get to the ARIN site,
Type in (or cut and paste) the IP number from above into the 'Search Whois' field.
You'll get the following:

Country: NL
Since the search pulls up an address in the Netherlands, this definitely is not eBay. In fact, the site lists RIPE (the European counterpart of ARIN).
The fact that the sender's IP address is listed in RIPE means the sender was sitting at a computer somewhere in Europe when they sent the email to me.
ARIN is only one of five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) sites where you can conduct a "WhoIS" search to look up IP addresses. (See the whole list below.) All work about the same: you type in an IP address and the site spits out whatever relevant information it has about the number. Sometimes it has a lot of information, including contact people's names and phone numbers and sometimes it has nothing. Sometimes you have to search multiple sites for an answer, because each registry corresponds to a different area globally. But, the fact that our number was not in ARIN (which lists North American websites), and eBay is headquartered in California, means this email did not come from eBay. If a number doesn't show up in any of these
registries, that, too, is a very good sign that your email was not legitimate. Not all numbers are in these registries, because data has to be voluntarily submitted by the organization which owns the IP address. And not all domain registrars do this. But just about all legitimate businesses -- especially those concerned about Internet security, like banks and eBay -- are listed in the registries.

Does phishing work? According to the May 2005 issue of Community Banker (Found through INSPIRE), phishing scams have led to losses of more than $3 billion since April 2003. And phishing attempts have increased by 400% in the past six months.

Security Briefing #2

Wireless Security Part 2

If you have a home wireless network you should take the time to set it up securely. Make sure you have a personal firewall installed on all computers on your home network as well as up-to-date anti-virus software. Make sure you do Windows updates, if you have Windows computers.

Home Wireless Networks Best Practices

You will need to view the documentation that came with your wireless WAP/router in order to do many of the following tasks. You can also go to the manufacturer's website or Google 'home wireless security' for more info.

Glossary:
WAP: Wireless Access Point. The hardware the broadcasts your Internet connection via radio waves.
WEP: Wired Equivalent Privacy. The earliest attempt at wireless security systems, flawed at best.
WPA: WiFi Protected Access: the current, and more secure wireless security system.
VPN: Virtual Private Network. The ability to create a 'private' network over the Internet. On a wireless network, it can give you the same privacy you would have had your computers been connected by cable, in the same building.
MAC: Media Access Code. Unique identifier hardcoded onto all Internet- connected hardware, including network cards, WAPs, routers.

Buy the most recent, most secure wireless hardware you can afford.
You can buy Wireless Access Points for under $50 which will allow you to set up a wireless network very quickly and easily. But, setting up a WAP to be secure can be difficult. Although they are pricier, if you can afford the pricetag (roughtly $200?) you should really consider getting a Wireless Access Point that can also act as a router or getting both a Wireless Access Point and a router. A router can set up a firewall and provide some built-in security.
Things to look for in a Wireless Access Point:
--Router capabilities
--Built-in Firewall
--WPA security
--802.11g standard
--VPN (Virtual Private Network) capabilities.
Restrict broadcast of your SSID. The SSID is the name of your wireless network. If you don't publish or broadcast this, it's harder for outsiders to find your network. (Not impossible, though). See your documentation on how to NOT publish this. By default, most wireless routers will broadcast the SSID, advertising your network's presence to the world.
Change the name of your SSID to something other than the default name. Even if you don't broadcast the name, it's possible for people to 'see' your network. If you've kept the default name, all they have to do is go through a list of common default names and they've found you. You want to avoid the default names like 'linksys' or 'apple'
and avoid generic things like 'wireless.' You also want to avoid easily guessible things like EllisNetwork (people can always get your name off your mailbox on the curb). Change this SSID on a regular basis.
Change the default password provided by the manufacturer on the access point or wireless router. IF you don't, anybody can break in after taking a quick visit to the manufacturer's website and going to the Support area. Most manufacturer's publish their default passwords.
Place the access point or router in the center of your home and not near a window or exterior wall. Check the range (with a wireless laptop) Can you reach the network from your front yard or from down the street? If so, you need to be extremely vigilant about safeguarding your network.
Restrict MAC addresses. Your WAP/router will allow you to restrict which computers can connect to your network by identifying their MAC IDs. This is not Apple related, this stands for Media Access Code. Every Network Card that connects to the Internet has a unique identifier -- the MAC -- which is hardcoded onto that card. By limiting access to only computers you 'know,' you will be providing a small amount of security. But don't get smug -- it's very easy for somebody who's already attached to your network to 'impersonate' an allowed user by taking on (spoofing) their MAC address. The intruders would, however, need to know what your MAC addresses are already. If they've already been on your wireless network, this is extremely easy to get and to impersonate.
If you have an older (801.11 a or b) router and net cards, set up WEP. Most people don't do this because it's a pain to get right. And there's the added bonus that it's easily crackable. You should try, though. See your router documentation for details. WEP requires the WAP and each network card that attaches to the wireless network to exchange 'passwords.' Once set up, it will protect your data from packet sniffers (software that can eavesdrop on internet traffic). But, it's extremely easy to crack.
If you have a newer (802.11 g) WAP/router, use WPA. This is a bit more difficult to set up but is more secure. Again, it relies on a 'passwords' scheme between the WAP and network cards to access data, but the encryption is more secure. See your WAP/router documentation for details.
Once you buy your equipment - be aware that it, just like your software, will need to be updated occasionally. Example: Netgear sells a WAP/Router with VPN capabilities for which a recent exploit was found. The exploit allows hackers to very easily get your router's administrative password (meaning they can turn off the firewall, add themselves to the network, shut you out...). If you were using this particular router and hadn't upgraded to the latest firmware, you'd be at risk. Go to the manufacturer's website for more details about your own hardware.
Turn off shared resources. Don't have Windows share printers, files or folders without any password protection.
Turn off unused services. Don't run FTP or Telnet services.
Set up a Virtual Private Network. Unless this ability is built into your WAP/router, this can be a daunting task. There are some Open Source tools that will allow you to do this on your own (Even with older equipment). But this can be a daunting task, even for system administrators.

Security Briefing: Wireless Networks

The following security briefing is provided by Kathy Ellis, INCOLSA Systems Specialist. Kathy has been sending out security briefings via email in installments. I thought they are very helpful information that our library community would find interesting.

Wireless Security Part 1

It is understood that you already should have a personal firewall and updated anti-virus software on your computer before even considering joining a wireless network.

When connected to wireless networks, be very, very careful. This includes any type of public access... whether you are in a hotel, on a university campus, at the airport, ballpark or in a coffee shop. And it doesn't matter whether you are paying for or getting free wireless service.

If you have a home wireless system and you haven't followed the Home Wireless Network Best Practices (which will be outlined in the next Security Briefing), you are vulnerable, too.

If you live in an apartment or multi-unit dwelling or even if you live in a free-standing home, be aware that the range of your wireless service can extend beyond your walls and be available to your neighbors. If you have a laptop equipped with a wireless card, take a walk outside your front door with it and see how far your range goes.

In a public environment (or unprotected private network), it is possible for others to 'hijack' your connection without you even knowing it. All they need is a laptop with a strong signal and a few pieces of freely-available software. In effect, another person can 'watch' everything you type and even change the information on web pages you are viewing. They are probably not going to be able to read data off your hard drive, but they will be able to grab data you send or receive, while it is in transit.

You never, never want to enter secure data into your computer while on a public (or insecure private) wireless network. This includes: credit card information, online banking information or your social security number. Don't buy things online when you're at a Starbucks or any other public network. You should never do online banking at such a locale. Even if the site you visit is protected by SSL (https:// pages) you are still vulnerable to eavesdropping or hijacking. And the person doing the hijacking doesn't need to be sitting right next to you. They could be in an apartment above the coffee shop.

If you are going to sign up for a paid-for public wireless network (such as at an airport or coffee shop) it's a really bad idea to transmit your credit card over this wireless network in order to sign up. I realize this is a real catch-22. How can you sign up without transmitting your card info when asked? One way is to do homework ahead of time and see if you can sign up online before you leave home. Some will let you call a toll-free phone number.

You also want to be careful about sending and reading email at such locales, as it too can be read by outsiders. Don't type anything you wouldn't want anybody else to see, including password or credit card information. Outsiders probably won't be able to read what's on your hard drive, but may be able to 'snag' message information as it travels from your PC to the net.

So, the rule of thumb on wireless networks is to be aware that others may be listening. Don't let them hear anything you don't want them to hear.

Children's Author Comes to Library

Author Terry Reeves will visit the New Castle-Henry County Public Library on Tuesday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m.

The event is part of the monthly series of Family Night Story Time programs and will be held in the library's auditorium.

Reeves recently released his book Six Little Kitties, which was illustrated by his granddaughter Amber Wetherell. The book is based on a true story about orphaned stray kittens who came to the author's childhood home, and features optional endings, repetition, anticipation, and counting.

During his visit, the author will share from and about his book and talk about his upcoming books.

Self-Checkout Use Increases

You may have noticed that one of the features of the new library is a self-checkout station located on the second level.

For the month of April, 17% of the 21,971 items checked out from the library were checked out by patrons themselves using the self-checkout machine.

Library Offers Free Computer Classes

The library is offering two free computer courses during the month of May.

In the "Learning the Library Catalog" workshop, participants will learn how to use the library catalog features, how to conduct an effective search of the catalog, and how to use "My Account" functions such as renewing and reserving materials. Two sessions of the same class will be offered on Thursday, May 12, at 1 p.m. and Wednesday, May 25, at 3 p.m.

Three sessions of the same "Introduction to the Internet" class will be offered on May 17 from 10 a.m. to noon, May 18 from 1 to 3 p.m., and May 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. This class provides basic information about the daily use of the Internet including e-mail basics and how to avoid viruses. Questions concerning the Internet will be covered.

Spring Fun for Teens @ the Library

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Thursday, May 5, at 4 p.m. by making a Mexican Tin Ornament craft and enjoying chips, salsa and queso.

The May Teen Movie is Lemony Snicket's: A Series of Unfortunate Events, which will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11.

Get Your Game On! Teen Game Times is on Thursday, May 26.

Building Update: Moving Forward

Most of the demolition of the former '76 building is complete, and visible construction will begin soon. Some construction on that area is already underway. When the project is complete, this area will resemble the new addition and original Carnegie building.

Contractors anticipate that the elevator could be available as early as June. Patrons with mobility issues are encouraged to ask staff members to retrieve the information they need.

The entire building project is scheduled for completion in early fall of 2005.

Library Offers Outstanding Return on Investment

Looking for a solid investment? Try your local library. Results from a recent study show that New Castle-Henry County Public Library provides a 674% return on investment for its community.

In exchange for the $822,608 the library receives from property taxes for operating expenses, the library provides services worth $5,548,704. In other words, the library provides $6.74 worth of materials and services for every $1 received.

In 2004, fiction books for adults were circulated $41,472 times. The 2004 Bowker Annual average price for fiction books is $24.81, which means that if library patrons would have purchased the borrowed books, it would have cost them $1,028,920. Children's books are also popular at the library, with 88,394 books circulating last year alone. If those same books were purchased, using the same price source as the adult fiction, the cost would have been $1,706,888.

Here are some other estimated values of services and materials offered by the library:

Of course, the true value of the library can never be calculated. How can you put a price tag on a child's discoveries through reading? Or finding your family's history? Or reading a classic for the first time? Some things remain outside the realm of dollars and cents. The complete library experience is one of them.
